Hello, everyone. Welcome back. Today, we’ll discuss Usha Vance, the wife of vice presidential hopeful Senator JD Vance from Ohio, who addressed a wave of criticism. The controversy revolves around JD’s past statements suggesting that our country is being run by childless cat ladies.
This significant discussion took place on Monday morning, where Usha clarified her husband’s intent was never to cause distress or insult those who were trying to start families.
“A lot of people are unable to have kids for very complicated and important reasons. … There are people, of course, for biological reasons, medical reasons, that can’t have children. The target of these remarks is not them,” Vance said at the time.
In this interview, Usha’s first solo appearance since JD joined the Republican ticket, she voiced her frustration with those who focused more on the controversial phrase rather than the profound point her husband aimed to present. “I took a moment to look and actually see what he had said and tried to understand what the context was. That’s something I wish people would do a bit more often”, she stated.
She wishes people would spend less time obsessing over this three-word phrase and instead concentrate on what JD was attempting to communicate – that parenting in this country is challenging, and at times, our policies make it even harder. It’s a sentiment shared by many families across the nation.
Furthermore, she addressed the sensitive issue of infertility, describing it as a challenging experience that no one would ever want to mock or make fun of. It is an incredibly human and empathetic sentiment.

Senator Vance has been criticized for comments he made in 2021 while campaigning for an Ohio Senate seat. JD made a controversial statement about the country being run by childless individuals who, he suggested, were projecting their own misery onto the rest of the country.
JD explicitly mentioned Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC, and others, questioning the logic behind a country being run by those who he felt did not have a direct stake in its future. These comments sparked a significant controversy.
“It’s just a basic fact — you look at Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, AOC [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez] — the entire future of the Democrats is controlled by people without children,” Vance said. “And how does it make any sense that we’ve turned our country over to people who don’t really have a direct stake in it?”
However, in a clip of Vance’s 2021 remarks, he clarified that his comments were not targeted at individuals who can’t have children due to various complex and important reasons. Since these comments resurfaced, Democrats and the Harris campaign have utilized them against him.
In response, he defended his comments during an interview, framing it as a sarcastic comment and pivoting to criticize Democrats as antifamily.
