Alex Marquardt Announces He’s Leaving CNN

Alex Marquardt, the CNN national security correspondent at the center of a high-profile defamation case, announced his departure from the network on Monday — just weeks after CNN was hit with a $5 million judgment for airing a segment that a federal jury ruled defamed U.S. Navy veteran Zachary Young.

“Tough to say goodbye,” Marquardt wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “But it’s been an honor to work among the very best in the business.”

Marquardt, a former ABC News correspondent, had been with CNN for eight years. But his final months were marked by increasing scrutiny following a defamation suit that cast a glaring spotlight on both his reporting methods and CNN’s editorial oversight.

The lawsuit stemmed from CNN’s coverage of the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. In that coverage, Marquardt profiled private contractors — including Young — who were assisting with evacuations. But the report, according to the jury’s finding, misrepresented Young’s intentions, painting him as opportunistic and profiteering off the desperation of Afghan families and American allies.

Young’s legal team didn’t hold back. In opening arguments, attorney Kyle Roche accused CNN of prioritizing ratings over facts, declaring the report was built on reckless disregard for the truth.

“They didn’t care about the truth. They cared about theater,” Roche said, revealing internal CNN communications that described the piece as “full of holes like Swiss cheese” and “80 percent emotion and 20 percent obscured fact.”

The most damning evidence may have been text messages between Marquardt, Young, and CNN staff — which, according to court testimony, clearly showed that Marquardt was warned repeatedly that the story contained false and defamatory content. Despite this, the report aired, prompting Young to take legal action.

The jury awarded Young $5 million in economic and emotional damages. CNN was also found liable for punitive damages, though the amount remains undisclosed.

Notably, Marquardt has not publicly addressed the case in detail since the verdict and offered no explanation for his sudden exit. There is also no word yet on his next move professionally.
