CBS Host Comments On Border Report

Recently, CBS News host Margaret Brennan seemed quite puzzled by a poll showing majority support for deporting all illegal immigrants.

This poll, conducted by CBS News/YouGov between June 5-7, revealed that 62% of registered voters are in favor of a government program to deport all migrants living in the U.S. illegally. Let’s unpack this and see what’s going on.

Brennan highlighted some key points during her discussion. She noted that Homeland Security has reported President Biden deported or repatriated more people in the past year than any year since 2010. Despite this, there’s still strong support for more drastic measures.

Brennan questioned the practicality of rounding up children and pointed out that courts have doubted whether local authorities can handle such tasks, and federal resources are limited. She asked, “So what exactly do people think they’re supporting?”

Anthony Salvanto, CBS’ director of elections and surveys, shed some light on this. He explained that while most support for the deportation effort comes from Trump supporters, some Democrats are on board, too.

He clarified that public sentiment on policy often reflects a general direction rather than specific details. When asked if local authorities should help deport migrants, many respondents said yes, although the specifics were unclear.

Salvanto pointed out a broader dissatisfaction with the current system, suggesting that people’s support for such policies stems from a belief that the system isn’t working. Brennan added that Americans just want the government to “do something” about the issue.

Former President Trump has proposed using the National Guard for deportations, promising to carry out “the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.” Meanwhile, President Biden recently took executive action at the southern border.

His proclamation temporarily suspends the entry of non-citizens once border encounters exceed 2,500 a day over a week. This measure aims to help immigration officers quickly remove individuals without a legal basis to stay in the U.S.
