Oh, look, another left-wing think tank hosting a pity party for Democrats still reeling from the fact that Donald Trump did, in fact, run the country for four years—and did it well and now he’s bound to do it again.
This week, the Soros-funded Center for American Progress (because of course it’s Soros-funded) held a symposium on how House Democrats are dealing with Trump’s national security strategy. The star of the show? Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, who came armed with plenty of dramatic takes and zero solutions.
Right out of the gate, Smith called Trump’s foreign policy “illegal” and “dumb.” Strong words, Congressman. Care to elaborate? Oh, wait, no, just more doomsday predictions. According to Smith, Trump’s “peace through strength” strategy will “literally kill people.” That’s the level of discourse we’re working with here—straight to hysteria.
Smith then tried to paint Trump’s America First policy as some kind of nefarious plot to resurrect the 19th century. “Might makes right,” he whined, warning that if the U.S. took control of Greenland, the Panama Canal, or (bizarrely) Canada, Russia and China would start doing the same. Because that’s exactly what Trump was planning—marching troops into Ottawa to claim Tim Hortons for America.
Then came the classic leftist talking point: diplomacy, diplomacy, diplomacy. “We need to be willing to engage with adversaries,” Smith said, as if the last several decades of “diplomatic” dealings with China and Iran haven’t left the U.S. looking like a pushover. The reality is that Trump’s strategy wasn’t about “punching” world leaders, as Smith melodramatically put it. It was about asserting American interests instead of groveling before regimes that hate us.
But the highlight of Smith’s unhinged rant came when he let the mask slip on what Democrats really think of Trump supporters. When panel moderator Patrick Gaspard had the audacity to point out that Trump had negotiated a potential 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Smith didn’t address the policy—no, he pivoted to calling the “Putin wing” of the Republican Party a bunch of white Christian nationalists.
Ah, there it is. The Left’s favorite boogeyman. Apparently, according to Smith, there are conservatives out there who support Putin just because he’s “against woke.” Never mind that Trump was tougher on Russia than any modern president—arming Ukraine, sanctioning Russian oligarchs, and boosting U.S. energy independence to undercut Putin’s economy. But facts don’t matter when you can just screech “white nationalism” and call it a day.
Smith then went on a full-blown tirade about Trump dismantling the bureaucratic nightmare that is the federal government. He accused Trump of “smashing” the system by rooting out fraud, cutting waste, and reducing the bureaucracy’s stranglehold on American taxpayers. According to Smith, it’s not that government is inefficient—it’s just that Trump didn’t give bureaucrats enough “bandwidth” to do their jobs properly. Sure. Because what Washington really needs is more red tape.
Then we got to the part about Trump’s spending freeze on foreign aid, which—surprise, surprise—Smith wasn’t thrilled about. He mocked Trump for pointing out wasteful programs like a taxpayer-funded drag show in Ecuador, dismissing it as a “minuscule” expense. Never mind that these “minuscule” expenses add up to billions in wasted dollars on woke pet projects overseas. But hey, why should American taxpayers have a say in where their money goes, right?
And then, in true left-wing fashion, Smith wrapped up his rant by declaring that Trump is executing an “autocratic takeover” of the United States. The irony is rich. These are the same people who weaponized federal agencies against their political opponents, pushed for censorship under the guise of “misinformation,” and used COVID to justify unprecedented government overreach. But Trump? He’s the dictator.
To cap it all off, Smith actually praised Rep. Al Green (D-TX) for interrupting Trump’s State of the Union speech, calling Trump a liar and a traitor. This is the level of respect the Left has for a sitting president who the American people duly elected. If a Republican had done that to Obama, the media would have spent weeks calling it an assault on democracy.
This whole spectacle was just another example of the Left’s complete inability to handle a president who actually stands up for America. Trump is strengthening our military, making NATO pay its fair share, keeping our enemies in check, and negotiating peace deals that the Biden administration could only dream of. But because he isn’t bowing to the globalist agenda, he needs to be painted as a reckless, lawless, racist, authoritarian monster.

And guess what? They’re still terrified of him. Because deep down, even they know that if Trump wins again, their days of unchecked power are numbered.
