The U.S. House of Representatives voted unanimously on Wednesday to hold billionaire Leon Black in contempt of Congress. This move came after he ignored two subpoenas related to the Jeffrey Epstein probe. No one is above the law, and the House acted swiftly to enforce it. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer made that stance clear to the public. Leon Black’s legal team labeled the vote “an outrageous action that ignores the facts and the truth about Mr. Black.” They claim he already cooperated, but the House disagreed.
According to ABC News, Black bucked a committee subpoena calling for him to testify under oath. He was also told to turn over nondisclosure agreements from his time with Epstein. On Wednesday, the House approved the contempt resolution via unanimous consent. This followed a 41-0 vote by the Oversight Committee just one day prior on Tuesday. The New York Post reports the resolution transfers the issue to the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. That office will now decide whether to prosecute him criminally.
Black’s attorneys argue that the Committee abused its power and broke the law. They say the subpoenas have “no legitimate connection” to the committee’s purpose, per the Washington Examiner. Black filed a lawsuit earlier this month to block these demands. He claims turning over the documents would “expose women who value their privacy.” His team says these women have no public connection to Epstein and bargained for confidentiality. Since the mid-1990s, Black has maintained a social relationship with Epstein.
ABC News states that Black ultimately paid Epstein over $170 million for “tax and estate planning advice.” Following an internal review discovering these payments, he resigned as Apollo CEO in January 2021. That review concluded Black had no involvement in Epstein’s criminal activities. Nevertheless, Black faces court accusations of raping two women, one a minor, at Epstein’s 2002 residence. He denies these allegations.
The House resolution states that Black’s “willful refusal to comply” constitutes contempt of Congress. This referral to the Department of Justice is the next major step. NBC News indicates the Department will pursue further investigative leads concerning all Epstein-related matters. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will review the referral carefully. They will not shy away from filing additional cases if evidence warrants it.
Black’s lawyers say they intend to pursue litigation challenging this action. They plan to hold Chairman Comer accountable in the courts. Rep. Robert Garcia told reporters this is a “very important step” towards justice. He noted there is an “enormous amount of work to be done.” Garcia claims a massive cover-up happened at the White House from Day one. He says the investigation is just getting started.
