A former FBI agent has been arrested and charged with multiple crimes in connection with the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Jared L. Wise, 50, of Bend, Oregon, was arrested on Monday and charged with four misdemeanor counts, including entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct, and disruptive conduct Wise, 50, who worked in the bureau from 2004 to 2017.
According to an FBI affidavit, Wise was captured on surveillance footage inside the Capitol on January 6. He is seen on video clapping his hands and raising his arms in triumph after he entered the building through the Senate wing door. He left the building about nine minutes after entering. He eventually exited through a window near the Senate wing at approximately 2:32 p.m., court documents say.
The affidavit also alleges that Wise encouraged rioters attacking police officers to “kill ’em.”
Wise was an FBI special agent from 2004 to 2017. He was assigned to the FBI’s Portland field office, where he worked on a variety of cases, including white supremacist violence and child exploitation.
Wise is the second former law enforcement officer to be charged in connection with the January 6 attack. In January, a former Capitol Police officer, Thomas Robertson, was arrested and charged with seditious conspiracy.
FBI Special Agent Jessica Stone said in court documents that authorities received an anonymous tip more than a year after the riot claiming Wise had entered the Capitol. Through a court-ordered search warrant, Stone said the bureau obtained Wise’s cell phone records from AT&T for cell towers providing service to the United States Capitol.
Wise joins a list of at least 19 active and former members of law enforcement, including an ex-Drug Enforcement Agent, a former NYPD officer, and two off-duty Virginia police officers, who face changes related to the Capitol riot, according to reports.
