Somebody has finally done it…Republican Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs introduced articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The articles focus on how he has completely mishandled the unprecedented surge of illegal immigrants at the southern border of the United States.
It’s been under Mayorkas’ leadership that officials at the border had the highest month of encounters in the history of the country. There were more than 250,000 migrant encounters.
Biggs was not alone in introducing the articles of impeachment, there were one dozen Republican colleagues by his side.
The focus also centered on the increase of drugs and weapons coming across the southern border. Customs and Border Patrol seized more than 14,000 pounds of fentanyl in the fiscal year 2022 and more than half of that in the first three months of the fiscal year 2023.
“The actions of Secretary Mayorkas have made the border less secure and encouraged aliens to enter the United States illegally, instead of taking actions to maintain operational control of the border. His actions have subverted the will of Congress and the core tenants of the Constitution,” the resolution from Biggs stated.
On November 22, then-Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy promised to impeach Mayorkas if the secretary failed to resign from his post.
The Department of Homeland Security responded to the promise of McCarthy by saying they were proud to advance the “noble mission” of the Department and support their present workforce.
The DHS then chastised Congress for pointing fingers at someone else instead of coming to the table and working on solutions.
They did not answer a call to respond to the present move by members of Congress that seem to indicate McCarthy is going to keep his work.
And Mayorkas is not responding either. Maybe he is busy writing his letter of resignation.
