Claimed “Activist Athlete,” Gwen Berry recently snubbed the National Anthem during a ceremony at the 2021 Olympic trials.
Earlier this week we reported, Gwen Berry was on the podium after she received a bronze medal in the hammer throw. As the National Anthem played, Berry turned around with her left hand on her hip and shuffled her feet. Instead of facing the flag with her hand on her heart she turned towards the stands. As the anthem came to its conclusion she dropped a t-shirt over her head with the words “Activist Athlete.”
“I feel like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose,” Berry said of the timing of the anthem. “I was pissed, to be honest.”
“They said they were going to play it before we walked out, then they played it when we were out there,” Berry said. “But I don’t really want to talk about the anthem because that’s not important. The anthem doesn’t speak for me. It never has.”
“My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,” Berry said. “I’m here to represent those … who died due to systemic racism. That’s the important part. That’s why I’m going. That’s why I’m here today.”
The notorious selfish athlete didn’t always hate the American flag, a 2016 photo shows her proudly holding the American flag as she trained for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
What happened @MzBerryThrows? You deleted your website… did you realize it made you look like the phony who’s only woke to cash in? https://t.co/EH3K8ULSAv

As soon as the image went viral on social media Berry’s team deleted her website. Apparently, her dream in her run up to the 2016 elections didn’t include turning her back on America.
“I never said that I hated the country,” Berry told Fox News. “I never said that. All I said was I respect my people enough to not stand for or acknowledge something that disrespects them. I love my people. Point blank, period.”
However, many are questioning Berry’s motives once she became and “activists athlete.” Berry is now sponsored by the athletic brand Puma, a relationship she didn’t have until she joined a pro-Defund the Police group called Color of Change, which she didn’t join until last September.
“We’re proud to sponsor [Berry], to have negotiated a sponsorship with [Puma] and to continue to push corporations to support Black athletes who speak out for our communities. Grateful for Gwen’s leadership today and every day,” Color of Change posted to Twitter. “Thank you Color of Change for always standing with me,” Berry responded.
