Olympic Hopeful Disgraces The US Flag During The National Anthem

Over the past week athletes have competed at the US Olympic track and field trials in hopes of making the US team for this years summer Olympics.

Over the weekend outspoken athlete Gwen Berry was on the podium after she received a bronze medal in the hammer throw. As the National Anthem played, Berry turned around with her left hand on her hip and shuffled her feet. Instead of facing the flag with her hand on her heart she turned towards the stands. As the anthem came to its conclusion she dropped a t-shirt over her head with the words “Activist Athlete.”

“I feel like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose,” Berry said of the timing of the anthem. “I was pissed, to be honest.”

“They said they were going to play it before we walked out, then they played it when we were out there,” Berry said. “But I don’t really want to talk about the anthem because that’s not important. The anthem doesn’t speak for me. It never has.”

“My purpose and my mission is bigger than sports,” Berry said. “I’m here to represent those … who died due to systemic racism. That’s the important part. That’s why I’m going. That’s why I’m here today.”

Radio host Mark Davis pointed out that Berry “needs to learn that it’s not about the anthem ‘speaking for her,’ it’s about a moment of gratitude for this country that makes her Olympic dream possible.”

“Shameful self-absorption,” he added.

Berry’s attention seeking stunt has taken the spotlight away from some incredible accomplishments  made by other athletes. Gabby Thomas became the second fastest woman ever in the 200, winning the final in 21.61 seconds.
