House Democrats Split as Majority Votes to Cut Israel Aid

A Party Divided on Defense

More than half of House Democrats voted to strip $3.3 billion in US aid from Israel. That’s a lot of money. This move marks a major shift in how the party views its long-time ally.

The vote took place on Wednesday and showed deep cracks in the Democratic ranks. The split signals a break from the rock-solid bipartisan support that once defined US policy. While the amendment failed to attach to the larger spending bill, the numbers tell a clear story. According to the New York Post — Politics, 104 Democrats voted for the cut while 314 voted against it. Almost as many members voted against the measure as for it. Not great. It’s a classic sign of a fractured coalition. (And here’s why it matters.)

Most Republicans stood together to preserve the funding for Israel. The vote serves as a stark accounting of changing attitudes. It highlights the growing divide over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s war strategy in Gaza. The conflict has now dragged on for nearly three years since the Oct. 7 attacks. Think about that. Three years of non-stop fighting. No kidding.

Leadership Breaks Ranks

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced he opposed the measure to zero out the aid. Yet he also stated that American policy in the Middle East must change for the good of Israel and Palestinians.

He shared these views in a letter to colleagues before a private meeting. Jeffries believes there are more decisive ways to achieve urgent change with the far-right Netanyahu government. The Democratic Whip, Rep. Katherine Clark of Massachusetts, announced she would support the measure to withhold funds.

This shows that top leaders do not agree on how to handle the crisis. Look, when the whip and the leader aren’t on the same page, you’ve got a problem. The deepening divide threatens to upend the Democratic Party as a whole. They face an energized left flank promoting self-proclaimed democratic socialists in key races. This internal fight came to a head in New York last month during primary elections. And here’s the kicker: it’s just getting started.

The Dem far left base is in control of the party, and members are afraid of the beast they unleashed. They have no control over it. It’s an election year, and they need every vote they can get, and their base will stay home if they vote for Israel. The Democratic Party is in shambles, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
