Jim Jordan Discusses Shutdown

When it comes to the current government shutdown, Democrats are desperate to reframe the narrative — because the truth is not on their side. At its core, this standoff isn’t about funding veterans, paying border agents, or keeping national parks open. It’s about one thing: Democrats want $1.5 trillion to extend and expand healthcare subsidies, including for illegal immigrants — and Republicans said no.

On CNN, Kaitlan Collins tried to steer the conversation in a different direction during a tense exchange with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), but Jordan wasn’t having it. Collins, in textbook mainstream media fashion, tried to isolate the issue down to one sympathetic talking point: health care subsidies expiring in December. But Jordan, staying on message and backed by a factual record, wasn’t about to let that pivot go unchecked.

“You’re talking about health care,” Jordan reminded her, “and all I know is Maxine Waters said we want health care for illegal immigrants.” It wasn’t hyperbole. As Jordan accurately pointed out, every single Democratic presidential candidate on the 2020 debate stage raised their hand when asked whether they supported government-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants — Kamala Harris, Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Elizabeth Warren, all of them.

This is not a fringe position. It’s the Democratic Party platform. And now, during a government shutdown, they are effectively demanding that taxpayers fund healthcare subsidies not only for citizens in need, but for those who entered the country illegally. Republicans are drawing a line — and they’re doing it with a clean continuing resolution that simply maintains Biden-era spending levels and keeps the government open for seven weeks. That’s what makes the Democrats’ refusal to support it all the more revealing.

Collins insisted, “Don’t change the subject.” But Jordan was making the essential point: you can’t talk about healthcare subsidies in this context without acknowledging that Democrats want to expand who qualifies — and that includes non-citizens.

That’s the crux of the disagreement, and it’s one the Left is desperate to conceal. Their strategy has been to scream “shutdown!” and hope the public assumes Republicans are playing games. But when you peel back the headlines, it’s clear that GOP leadership — including Speaker Mike Johnson — is offering a straightforward solution: fund the government temporarily, work out the details, and protect the integrity of taxpayer-funded healthcare by keeping it focused on Americans.

The Democrats’ refusal to agree to this framework exposes their real priorities. The demand for NPR funding, the push for ever-expanding entitlement programs, and yes — the inclusion of illegal immigrants in those benefits — have nothing to do with running the government. They’re ideological pursuits masquerading as budget essentials.

Jordan asked the right question: “How is that going to help the families I represent?” And the answer is — it won’t. Extending healthcare subsidies to those who aren’t even supposed to be here adds cost, burdens our already strained system, and insults the millions of working-class Americans who are paying into a system that’s being hijacked for political gain.

So yes, Collins tried to change the narrative. But Jordan brought it back to reality: this isn’t about compassion — it’s about priorities. And once again, Democrats are choosing their ideological agenda over the American taxpayer. That’s why the government is shut down. And no amount of media spin is going to change that.
