On Sunday, US special envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Despite the grim realities facing the region, the delegation departed with a sense of optimism regarding the advancement of peace negotiations.
As both countries prepare for a severe winter, the envoys are striving to halt the combat. This gathering represents a pivotal moment, with American mediators urging for an agreement before temperatures drop further.
Following a three-hour session with Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day, Witkoff remarked, “We came here, and I think we really feel good about what has happened in the conversations in Moscow and now the conversations here.”
While this Sunday constituted their inaugural official on-site visit to Ukraine, Witkoff has previously traveled to Moscow eight times over the past eighteen months to confer with Russian authorities.
The New York Post reports that the Kremlin executed strikes targeting Kyiv and Boryspil international airports immediately prior to the envoys’ arrival. Zelensky verified that these assaults occurred before the high-stakes journey.
The pair is simultaneously managing several conflicts throughout the Middle East. Kushner briefly recognized the obstacles hindering their efforts to secure peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Kushner observed, “We’re working through some political issues in Israel. I think we agree with them on the end state.” He further noted that recent elections have introduced a degree of irrationality into the situation in specific areas.
He cautioned that demilitarization will prove difficult due to the extensive military buildup in Gaza. “By the way, we’re now starting to understand the scope of the militarization of Gaza. It is beyond your comprehension,” he stated.
Officials from the US and Ukraine are currently developing a peace strategy aimed at concluding Russia’s war against Ukraine. Witkoff noted, “One thing Steve and I really thought would be productive is to go back to the trilateral format.” They anticipate making progress on this initiative shortly.
