LEGO is facing criticism after publishing a social media animation celebrating Pride Month, with opponents accusing the toy company of promoting political and social messages through a brand primarily associated with children.
The short animated video, posted to LEGO’s Instagram account and Instagram Stories near the end of June, featured three LEGO characters sharing personal stories related to their LGBTQ identities and experiences.
In the first segment, one character described attending his first Pride parade after moving to a new country.

This is a toy brand for children!!
They just posted this video promoting gay marriage and marching in Pride parades.

“One of the most amazing moments for me in my journey of self-discovery was the first time that I attended a ‘pride’ parade after moving to a new country,” the character said.
“It was a beautiful sunny day, I was surrounded by people who made me feel really comfortable to be myself. I was overwhelmed with pride for what it meant to be in the LGBTQIA community.”
A second segment featured a woman describing how a close friendship with another woman eventually became a romantic relationship.
“Somehow this best friendship grew into this romantic kind of love right before my very eyes,” she said. “I realized I found my person and she happens to have shown up in the form of a woman.”
The final story focused on a man recalling his marriage proposal to his boyfriend while visiting Kew Gardens in London.

“Last year, I asked my boyfriend to marry me while we were in Kew Gardens in London,” he said. “We ended up in the Japanese landscape garden and I asked him to pose for a photo. But when he turned around, I proposed.”
The campaign immediately drew praise from supporters, who viewed it as another example of LEGO recognizing LGBTQ customers and families. Critics, however, argued that the company was introducing divisive social issues into a brand aimed largely at children.
The latest controversy also revived discussion of LEGO’s 2021 release of its “Everyone Is Awesome” set, a rainbow-themed display intended to celebrate diversity and LGBTQ inclusion. At the time, the set generated both positive reactions and criticism. Some LGBTQ advocates argued that the company should go beyond symbolic products by providing additional support to advocacy organizations, while others praised the release as a meaningful gesture of inclusion.

Critics of the new Pride-themed animation also pointed to other controversies involving the LEGO brand, including the circulation of AI-generated videos that used LEGO-style imagery to promote political messaging during tensions involving Iran. Those videos were not official LEGO productions.
As debate over the company’s latest social media campaign continued, reactions remained sharply divided.
One critic wrote on social media, “LEGO is now openly pushing Pride parades, gay marriage, and rainbow ideology straight at children.”
Supporters rejected that characterization, arguing the animation simply depicted LGBTQ people sharing personal experiences and reflected the company’s longstanding commitment to inclusion.
