Michelle Obama Discusses The Reiner’s

The shockwaves from the brutal killings of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, continue to ripple outward, touching the highest levels of politics and Hollywood alike. Among those devastated by the news were Barack and Michelle Obama, who revealed that they were supposed to meet the couple on the very night they were allegedly killed by their son, Nick Reiner, inside their Los Angeles home.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday night, Michelle Obama spoke with visible emotion when asked how she was processing the loss. “We were supposed to be seeing them that night — last night — and we got the news,” she said. The former first lady described the Reiners as close friends of “many, many years,” underscoring the personal nature of the tragedy.

Her comments quickly moved beyond grief and into defense. Without naming him directly, Obama appeared to push back against President Donald Trump’s remarks following Reiner’s death, in which he referred to the director as “deranged” and “tortured and struggling.” Michelle Obama rejected that characterization outright, calling Rob and Michele Reiner “some of the most decent, courageous people you would ever want to know.” She described them as passionate, principled, and willing to act on what they believed in, particularly at a time when, in her words, courage is in short supply.

Former President Barack Obama echoed those sentiments in a statement posted to X, praising Reiner’s storied career and the values he and his wife embodied.

While Reiner was best known for iconic films like The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and This Is Spinal Tap, Obama emphasized that the filmmaker’s legacy went beyond entertainment, rooted instead in a deep belief in human goodness and a lifelong commitment to civic engagement. Together, he wrote, Rob and Michele Reiner lived lives defined by purpose.

The circumstances of their deaths, however, have cast a dark shadow over that legacy. The couple was found dead Sunday afternoon at their Brentwood mansion. Their son, Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and charged with their murders.

According to sources, their daughter Romy, 28, discovered the bodies and told investigators that her brother “should be a suspect,” describing him as dangerous. Nick Reiner, who reportedly has a history of substance abuse and mental health struggles, has been placed on suicide watch and is being held on $4 million bail.
