Pelosi’s Got Some Good News and Bad News for Schiff

Rep. Nancy Pelosi had some good news and some bad news for Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff’s senate bid in 2024.

She said that she would support Schiff under one condition, that Sen. Dianne Feinstein does not run in 2024, according to Bloomberg.

Schiff announced recently that he is planning to run for a senate seat, at this point that means that he could be challenging Feinstein for the position. But Feinstein is 89 years old and she will finish her sixth term in 2024.

Schiff won’t be running alone, Rep. Katie Porter, a Democrat, also announced that she will run for Feinstein’s seat in mid-January.

“If [Feinstein] decides not to run, I will be supporting House Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff, who knows well the nexus between a strong democracy and a strong economy,” Pelosi, the former House speaker, said in a statement.

She added that in his service to the House, he has focused on strengthening our Democracy with justice and he has committed to building an economy that works for all.

Sen. Feinstein is reportedly facing extensive memory loss, she has filed for running again in 2024 but she has not publicly declared her intentions.

Schiff has already established a platform focused on “democracy.”

“Our democracy is at great risk,” Schiff said. “Because GOP leaders care more about power than anything else. And because our economy isn’t working for millions of hseard working Americans. We’re in the fight of our lives – a fight I’m ready to lead as California’s next U.S. senator.”

Schiff is seeing his influence decline in the House, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy recently kicked Schiff, alongside Swalwell and Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, off of different committees.

A spokesperson for Feinstein did not immediately return an email seeking comment on Pelosi’s announcement.
