What began as a routine pursuit of four suspected illegal immigrants near Eagle Pass, Texas, turned into something considerably more serious when Border Patrol agents checked the identity of one man in the group.
Agents discovered they had apprehended a convicted child sex offender who had previously been removed from the United States and had allegedly returned illegally.
Border Patrol agents detected the group attempting to enter the country illegally on Aug. 19 and gave chase before apprehending all four.
Agents then ran the individuals through immigration and criminal databases, a standard procedure intended to identify previous immigration violations, outstanding warrants or criminal histories.
That check reportedly identified one member of the group as 52-year-old Alexis Suarez-Trejos, a Cuban national and registered sex offender in Nevada.
According to criminal database records, Suarez-Trejos was convicted in Clark County, Nevada, in 2001 of an offense related to the sexual assault of a child under 14.
He received a sentence of 40 months behind bars and was placed on Nevada’s sex offender registry.
His history with U.S. immigration authorities did not end there.
After his conviction and prison sentence, Suarez-Trejos was removed from the United States. His immigration record reportedly contains multiple immigration offenses, and his most recent removal took place on Oct. 22, 2025.
Less than a year later, Border Patrol agents say they encountered him back inside the United States near Eagle Pass.
Suarez-Trejos now faces a federal charge of illegal re-entry after deportation under 8 U.S.C. Section 1326.
Illegal re-entry can carry significantly enhanced penalties for certain defendants with serious criminal convictions. Authorities say Suarez-Trejos could face as many as 20 years in prison because of his status as an aggravated felon.
Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony “Scott” Good pointed directly to Suarez-Trejos’ criminal record while commenting on the arrest.
“Illegal aliens who prey on the children of our communities are an egregious threat,” Good said. “I’m proud of our agents who, every day, stand ready to protect this nation from such dangers.”
