Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana has called out the Democrats for their “sham” attempt to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.). Feinstein, who is 88 years old, is the oldest sitting member of the Senate. She has served in the Senate since 1992.
In recent months, there have been growing calls for Feinstein to step down. Her age and her recent memory lapses have raised concerns about her ability to serve effectively.
The Democrats have been reluctant to force Feinstein out, however. They are worried about losing her seat in a special election. So, instead, they have tried to maneuver her into retiring gracefully.
Last month, the Democrats held a closed-door meeting with Feinstein. At the meeting, they reportedly urged her to retire at the end of her term in 2024. Feinstein reportedly resisted their pressure.
The Democrats have not given up, however. They are now reportedly considering a plan to have Feinstein declare herself “incapacitated.” This would allow them to appoint a temporary replacement until Feinstein’s term ends in 2024.
Sen. Kennedy has called out the Democrats for this plan. He has said that it is a “sham” and that it is a “disgrace.”
“The Democrats are trying to rig the system,” Kennedy said. “They are trying to steal a seat from the people of California.”
Kennedy has called on the Democrats to allow the people of California to decide Feinstein’s future. He has said that the people should have the right to vote on whether or not Feinstein should be re-elected.
The Democrats have not yet responded to Kennedy’s comments. It remains to be seen whether or not they will go through with their plan to have Feinstein declare herself “incapacitated.”
However, Kennedy’s comments have put the Democrats on the defensive. They are now facing accusations of trying to rig the system and steal a seat from the people of California. It will be interesting to see how they respond.
