The Secret Service is trying to keep a secret that involves Vice President Kamala Harris’ motorcade. They are being accused of downplaying an accident in the motorcade that caused Harris to have to be transported to a different vehicle.
On Monday, there was a TikTok video of the vice president’s motorcade blocking a tunnel in Washington, D.C. that went viral. The video shows Secret Service agents escorting Harris from a black SUV that people standing by said was “crashed.”
Officials within the Secret Service initially claimed a “mechanical failure” caused Harris to be transferred to another vehicle. The scene caused the vice president to delay her arrival at the White House Monday morning.
By the afternoon on Monday, Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle received information that her agents had not “accurately conveyed” what happened, according to the Washington Post.
A “mechanical failure” had not, in fact, stopped the motorcade, but the driver of the vice president’s SUV allegedly struck the side pavement hard enough that one of the tires needed immediate replacement.
Cheatle told some people close to her that she was disturbed by the inaccuracy of the alert related to the Harris accident.
A spokesperson for the Secret Service deflected questions asserting that agents tried to downplay the severity of the incident.
Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi had this to say about the incident, “During a protective movement Monday, a vehicle in a motorcade had a minor overcorrection and struck a curb,” he said in a statement. “The protectee was transferred to a secondary vehicle, and the motorcade continued to its destination. There were no injuries to anyone.”
“Initial radio traffic indicated this was a mechanical failure, and that was communicated to agency leadership by personnel supporting the motorcade movement,” Guglielmi added. “After the protective movement was completed, leadership was verbally updated with additional pertinent facts that the vehicle struck a curb.”
