House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has indicated that Republicans are moving toward an impeachment inquiry of President Joe Biden. McCarthy made the comments in an interview with Fox News on Monday night, saying that the GOP’s investigations into the business dealings of Biden’s family members are “rising to the level of impeachment inquiry.”
McCarthy said that Republicans have been “following the facts” in their investigations and that they have “found a lot of troubling information.” He specifically mentioned the laptop of Hunter Biden, the president’s son, which contains emails and other documents that suggest that Hunter Biden was involved in corrupt business dealings in Ukraine and China.
McCarthy’s remarks come on the heels of Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) releasing an FBI-generated FD-1023 form last week in which a human confidential source told the FBI that Burisma co-founder and CEO Mykola Zlochevsky claimed that he was “coerced” by the then-Vice President Biden and his son into paying millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for their help in pressuring Ukraine to fire a prosecutor who was investigating Burisma
McCarthy said that Republicans are “not going to sweep this under the rug” and “going to get to the bottom of this.” He said that if the evidence warrants it, Republicans will impeach Biden.
“The FBI kept this from the IRS,” McCarthy told Fox News host Sean Hannity. “So, not only do they claim that they were bribed, we now find information that 16 out of 17 payments from Romania were provided to the Biden shell companies while he was vice president.”
“This is rising to the level of impeachment inquiry, which provides Congress the strongest power to get the rest of the knowledge and information needed,” McCarthy said, later adding: “I believe we will follow this all the way to the end. And this is going to rise to an impeachment inquiry the way the Constitution tells us to do this. And we have to get the answers to these questions.”
“We are looking forward very much to hearing from Devon Archer about all the times he has witnessed Joe Biden meeting with Hunter Biden’s overseas business partners when he was vice president, including on speakerphone,” House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) said.
