This pushback from the Trump campaign comes after an article from Axios claimed that Harris had flip-flopped on the border wall issue. The article pointed out that Harris had supported a bipartisan border bill that included provisions for the wall. This bill, however, is far from what Trump had envisioned. It proposed only $650 million for the wall—a fraction of Trump’s original $18 billion request—and included various measures that could, according to some experts, exacerbate the border crisis.

The proposed legislation had other controversial elements as well. It would restrict border wall spending and set high thresholds for when the Department of Homeland Security must take emergency action on the border. Additionally, it would codify the practice of “catch and release,” where families and children crossing the border illegally would be released without supervision. The Heritage Foundation even warned that the bill would allow for an expansion of parole authority, a tool the Biden-Harris administration has used to increase immigration.
