Trump Condemns AOC and Mamdani for Laughing at 9/11 Ceremony

President Donald Trump condemned Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for laughing during the solemn 9/11 memorial reading on Friday. The video shows the two Democrats smiling and chatting while the names of nearly 3,000 victims were read aloud at Ground Zero. This behavior marked a deep disrespect for the families mourning the loss of their loved ones. This ceremony paid tribute to victims of the 2001 attacks as well as the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Trump called the moment “terrible” and said it was inappropriate for such a sacred event.

A petition urging Mamdani to stay away gathered more than 110,000 signatures from victims’ families. Despite this outcry, the mayor attended the event and remained for the full ceremony. Fox News reported that a television feed showed a young man overcome with emotion before cutting to the smiling pair. Their conversation could not be heard, but the visual was clear.

Rep. Wesley Hunt of Texas posted on X stating that “September 11 is not a photo op, it is not a networking event. He stated that Ground Zero is sacred ground and not a place for politics.

Trump reacted with fury after seeing the clip of the two officials sharing a lighthearted exchange. “It is TERRIBLE that they laughed together during a VERY important part of the ceremony, which was inappropriate.” he said. He further remarked that the behavior was terrible and “it’s not a place to be laughing, especially in that case. RedState observed that Trump had just left the GOP midterm convention where he attacked extremist Democrats. He has long argued that politicians must show basic decency to the American people.

New York City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, a Republican, also condemned the moment as vile. She wrote that after thousands of families begged Mamdani not to show up, he stood there and laughed while they wept. Michael Ragusa, who served in former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s entourage, disputed claims that they were joking about the ceremony. However, the visual evidence sparked widespread criticism online from conservatives and moderates alike. The timing of the laughter coincided with the reading of names, a moment meant for silence and reflection.

This incident strikes at the heart of how we honor our fallen heroes and respect our shared history. When leaders treat a memorial for the dead as a social gathering, it tells families their pain does not matter. You teach your children to be kind and respectful, especially when others are hurting. These officials failed that basic test of character in front of the entire country.

The 25th anniversary of 9/11 was a day to remember the strength of the American spirit. Instead, the focus shifted to the arrogance of those in power. It is not just about one moment; it is about the values we uphold as a nation.

The backlash was swift and brutal, as it should have been. Critics on social media asked why these two were laughing when the nation was mourning. The incident highlights a growing divide between the political class and the everyday American. Trump’s condemnation gave voice to the anger felt by many who watched the clip.
