Well, folks, it looks like even Governor Gavin Newsom couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at the Democratic Party’s last-minute switcheroo, swapping out President Biden for Vice President Kamala Harris just days before the Democratic National Convention.
During a chat on the “Pod Save America” podcast, Newsom played along with the party line, but his jokes and not-so-subtle sarcasm made it pretty clear he’s not entirely thrilled with how things went down.
When asked about “the switch,” Newsom couldn’t resist poking fun at the supposed “open” and “inclusive” process, delivering his lines with a wink and a nod that even the hosts couldn’t ignore. “That’s what I’ve been told to say,” he quipped, earning some chuckles from the podcast crew. But beneath the laughter, it was obvious that Newsom might not be as “unified” as he claimed.
“I mean … the switch,” Newsom shrugged and laughed. “Now, we went through a very open process, a very inclusive process. It was bottom-up, I don’t know if you know that. Yes, that’s what I’ve been told to say.”
After all, it’s hard to sell the idea of a bottom-up, grassroots process when it looks more like a top-down decision made in the backroom with a stopwatch ticking. Newsom’s reference to the “30-minute convention” and the lightning-fast “blitz primary” didn’t exactly scream confidence in the party’s handling of the situation.
But, of course, in true political fashion, he wrapped it up with a line about how “unified” everyone is. “Yeah, it’s been amazing, but you know what is amazing is how unified everybody is,” Newsom concluded. “I mean, it’s next level.”
🚨Wow. Gavin Newsom mocks the Democrats’ coronation of Kamala Harris:
Host: “How are you feeling about the switch?”

Sure, Governor, whatever you say. Because nothing says unity like a last-minute political scramble that leaves even your own party members questioning what just happened.
