Schumer Smacks Down Bill That Would Have Slashed Your Power Costs

Senate Democrats blocked a bill that would have lowered your electricity costs on Wednesday. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and his party stopped the measure despite strong public support. This move keeps power bills higher for families while AI data centers pay nothing extra.

The House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act with 417 votes and only three no votes. This bill would have forced AI companies to bear the brunt of electricity costs. Per Fox News, four Democrats broke ranks to support the plan, but Schumer killed it anyway.

Schumer called the bill a fraud that offers no real protections at all. He claimed Republicans are offering a toothless messaging bill instead of real action. According to Fox News, Schumer stated, “The Ratepayer Protection Act is a fraud. It does not require any protections at all.”

Most voters want to see lower prices for their energy use right now. A July poll found that 70% of voters opposed the construction of new data centers. Per Fox News, this includes both Republicans and Democrats who are worried about rising costs.

Rep. Ami Bera, a Democrat, said politics are getting in the way of a good bill. He noted that Senate Democrats are blocking the act because of “politics that are coming into play.” Breitbart reported that Bera called it a good start that needs to pass.

Bera told his colleagues to put aside their political games and send the bill to the president. He admitted the bill is not an endpoint but said it is a good start. According to Breitbart, Bera stated, “I’d put the politics aside, and I would say, pass the bill, send it to the president’s desk.”

These data centers use massive amounts of power that your local grid must supply. When companies do not pay for the energy they use, your family pays the difference. RedState noted that this bill was designed to keep rates reasonable for people in affected areas.

Schumer argues the bill is optional and lacks enforcement mechanisms for real guardrails. He asked why Republicans would push forward a bill that is totally optional. Per Fox News, Schumer stated, “While Americans are demanding real guardrails on AI and data centers, Republicans are offering a toothless messaging bill.”

The Senate has not answered why they would block a plan with such wide support. The vote count shows that almost everyone in the House wanted this to happen.
