Senator John Fetterman Reacts to Recent Candidate Wins

Sen. John Fetterman says the Democratic Party is changing into something he no longer recognizes, and after a wave of victories by democratic socialist candidates in New York City, he believes recent elections have confirmed his concerns.

“I said months ago, I said the Democratic Party is becoming an orgy of socialism. These recent elections vindicate my description,” Fetterman said, according to the New York Post.

The Pennsylvania Democrat was reacting to a series of Democratic primary victories in New York, where several candidates aligned with the party’s progressive wing defeated more established or moderate opponents. Among the most closely watched races was the Democratic primary in New York’s 13th Congressional District, where Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly unseated five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat.


Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander and state Assembly member Claire Valdez also won competitive primaries against more centrist rivals. All three candidates received strong backing from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, while Avila Chevalier and Valdez are members of the Democratic Socialists of America.

For Fetterman, however, Avila Chevalier represents what he sees as the party’s most troubling direction.

“Chevalier described America as a f–king disgrace. She posted ‘f–k Kamala Harris’ and posted that she forgot napkins and wiped her hands on the American flag,” Fetterman said. “She wants to abolish the border, abolish prisons. That is a deeply disturbed individual.”

He also took aim at Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner, referring to him by an online nickname.

“P-Hustle and Chevalier: the dirtbag left’s new power couple,” Fetterman said.

Despite his growing frustration with the party’s left flank, Fetterman dismissed suggestions that he is preparing to leave the Democratic Party. He argued that switching parties would not alter his positions on the issues.


“Even if I changed my party, my votes or views wouldn’t change,” Fetterman said. “I address this very directly. That’s the truth.”

Fetterman has become one of the Democratic Party’s most outspoken internal critics, frequently challenging progressive activists on issues ranging from Israel to crime and immigration. In a recent interview with Fox News, he argued that many traditional Democrats are now finding themselves targeted by activists who demand ideological conformity.

“The kind of people they are trying to run out of office, they are just good, traditional kinds of Democrats you would expect in New York City now,” Fetterman said.

“And now this has just become — really, it’s just been the dancing days of the dirtbag left. You know, some of these candidates are outrageous.”


He continued by criticizing policy positions he associates with the party’s activist wing.

“You have candidates, they’re ‘abolish ICE,’ ‘abolish the police,’ ‘abolish the border.'”

Fetterman is not the only prominent Democrat raising alarms. Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville recently suggested the ideological divide inside the party may have reached the point where coexistence is no longer possible.

“I have the quote right here, I’ll get to it. She has attacked interracial relationships and the American flag. Lady, I ain’t in the same party as you. I’m sorry,” Carville said during an episode of Politics War Room, according to Fox News.

He went further, arguing that Democrats may need to confront an uncomfortable reality.


“I’m just not, and I actually do think it’s time for Democrats to talk ‘the S-word.’ ‘Schism.’ I really do.”

“For years, everybody’s always said, ‘No, no, we’re a coalition. We’re a big tent,'” Carville continued. “And there’s just some stuff that I can’t be in the same tent with.”

Whether these primary results represent a lasting shift in Democratic politics or simply reflect the ideological makeup of a handful of heavily Democratic districts remains to be seen.
