Trump Admin Pauses Over $1B in Medicaid Payments for Fraud

Fraud Stops the Cash

The Trump administration has frozen more than $1 billion in federal Medicaid funding for California and Minnesota. This move targets suspected fraud and noncompliance with federal rules. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made the tough call to stop the money flow immediately.

Officials are holding back roughly $867 million from California and over $200 million from Minnesota. They will not release another taxpayer dollar until states prove the payments were legitimate. If it smells like fraud, we’re not paying for it anymore, said CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. This is a bold stand against waste.

According to Fox News Politics, Treasury even intercepted nearly $99 million in payments sent to deceased individuals. It is shocking that money went to people who are already dead. The administration says it will use data to catch these errors before they happen.

Why California and Minnesota?

California faces the largest share of the freeze with about $646 million tied to in-home supportive services. Another $221 million involves claims for people with what Oz called unsatisfactory immigration status. According to the New York Post — Politics, spending in these home services was twice the national average.

Minnesota also faces scrutiny over high-risk categories like personal care and home-based services. The Washington Times reported that billing for deceased patients was a major issue there. CMS found claims that need more documentation and links to flagged providers. These are clear red flags that demand answers.

Dr. Oz stated that federal law mandates a pause when spending patterns look like significant outliers. We have a duty to stop the payments, demand answers and then follow the evidence wherever it leads, Kennedy told a news conference. The states must fix the problems before they get their money back.

Time for Accountability

This strategy shifts from chasing bad actors later to stopping the fraud now. Kennedy said the goal is to stop the fraud before it happens rather than clawing back funds after the fact. According to the Daily Signal, HHS is expanding its power to permanently ban bad actors from healthcare programs.

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz can get the funds back easily. Kennedy told them to just provide basic documentation showing the services are legitimate. If Governor Gavin Newsom or Governor Tim Walz wants this funding released, all they have to do is provide basic documentation showing that these services are legitimate and not fraudulent, he said.

We need to ensure our hard-earned tax dollars help real people with real problems. This pause proves that the government can finally hold states accountable for their mess. We want them to come alongside us, federal partners, to ensure that Medicaid dollars go to the services that are required by real people with real problems getting real care, said Dr. Mehmet Oz.
