Trump Announces Suspect In Kirk Shooting Arrest and Officials Give Update

On Friday morning, President Donald Trump joined Fox & Friends with a major update on the most closely watched investigation in the country: the manhunt for the assassin who killed Charlie Kirk. And according to the president, the search is over.

“With a high degree of certainty we have him in custody, OK, in custody,” Trump announced. He praised the coordinated work of federal agents, state authorities, and local law enforcement, saying, “Everybody did a great job, they worked with the local police, the governor, everybody did a great job.”

The news comes just two days after Kirk, 31, was gunned down during a Q&A session at Utah Valley University, the first stop of his American Comeback Tour. A single shot from a rooftop ended the life of the Turning Point USA co-founder, husband, and father of two.

On Thursday night, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox and state investigators released enhanced surveillance footage showing the gunman fleeing from the rooftop, evidence that helped narrow the search. By Friday morning, Fox News confirmed the suspect’s identity: 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah.

Trump revealed that Robinson’s capture came after “somebody who was very close to him turned him in.” That betrayal of trust may have been the decisive break authorities needed after processing thousands of leads and more than 200 interviews in the hours following the shooting.

The president also confirmed what Gov. Cox had signaled during Thursday’s press briefing: Utah is preparing to pursue the death penalty in the case. “The governor is intent on it,” Trump said, noting that justice must be absolute for such a heinous crime.
