On Sunday, ABC’s George Stephanopoulos stooped to a new low in his journalism career. In an interview with Representative Nancy Mace, he crossed a line by creating a conversation around rape- which he knew Mace had a history with and used it as a tool to shame Mace for her political choices. It is despicable and unprofessional.
Stephanopoulos, a former Bill Clinton official who has openly shown support for Joe Biden, conveniently overlooks the sexual harassment and assault allegations against both men. Instead, he chose to target Mace, a victim of rape, for supporting Donald Trump. This is a clear double standard and goes against any ethical journalism standards.
It’s absurd to believe that settling a civil lawsuit means someone is guilty while dismissing numerous accusations and a settlement against Biden as irrelevant. This is a dangerous line of thinking and completely ignores the importance of due process.
E. Jean Carroll’s allegations against Trump were brought up right before an election year and lack any substantial evidence. The fact that a New York jury found in her favor on some of her claims means very little in the grand scheme of things, as the burden of evidence was significantly lower.

But what’s even more alarming is the fact that Stephanopoulos used Mace’s own experience as a victim of rape against her. This is a deeply personal and traumatic event, and it is not something that should ever be weaponized for political gain. Stephanopoulos should apologize for his actions, and ABC News should take appropriate action if he fails to do so.
Imagine the outrage from the media and Democrats if a news anchor had asked Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about being raped and then used it to shame her for her political beliefs. There would be widespread condemnation and calls for accountability. But since it was a Republican, the outrage is noticeably absent.
Regardless of political beliefs, wrong is wrong. Stephanopoulos’ behavior was unacceptable and deserves to be condemned. He owes Mace and all victims of sexual assault an apology. This behavior has no place in journalism, and it’s time for ABC News to hold him accountable.
