Jeffries Blindsided as 192 Democrats Vote Against Socialism

Here is the number that should make your blood boil: 192 Democrats voted against a resolution denouncing socialism. That is not a small group of outliers. That is the majority of the minority party saying no to their own leadership’s stance. The House voted to condemn socialism “in all its forms” on Tuesday. Every single Republican voted yes. But 192 Democrats voted no. It is a stark contrast that shows just how far the party has drifted from American values.

Two brave Democrats actually saved the vote from failing. Reps. Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez crossed the aisle. They voted for the procedural rule that let the resolution pass. Their yes votes offset five Republican hardliners who were protesting. The rule passed by a razor-thin margin of 210-208. Without those two Democrats, the vote never happens. 192 Democrats voted no on a bill that says socialism is bad.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries did not see this coming. He told reporters he got no heads-up about the defections. He called the move “a significant breach of trust.” He demanded a serious response from the party rules committee. Jeffries tried to shift the blame to Whip Katherine Clark. He said reporters should take it up with her instead. The message is clear: break with leadership, and you will be punished. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi also piled on the criticism. She contrasted this mess with her own tenure in charge.

According to RedState, leadership is already floating ideas to strip committee assignments. They want to make an example of Golden and Gluesenkamp Perez. The goal is to scare other members into line. Jeffries said the decision to blindside the caucus “necessitates a serious response.” He asked the Committee on Caucus Rules to take this up in short order. The internal fighting is loud and messy. They are pointing fingers while the American people watch.

This vote was about more than just a slogan. The resolution also backs the SAVE America Act. It states that only American citizens should vote in American elections. Republican Rep. Jeff Crank introduced the measure on August 27. The text names the Democratic Socialists of America by name. It cites their support for noncitizen voting as a key problem. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise made the connection explicit. He said, “Not only do we denounce socialism, but also the idea of people that aren’t American citizens voting in our elections, because that’s part of their platform.”

Eight Democrats broke with the rest of their caucus to vote yes. They included Don Davis, Vicente Gonzalez, and Henry Cuellar. The only Independent, Kevin Kiley, also voted yes with the Republicans. But the vast majority of Democrats stood against it. They objected to tying the vote to the SAVE America Act. Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar said, “We’re capitalists. We believe in a capitalist system and rules and laws.” Yet he accused Republicans of using the resolution for another reason.

The Democrats are in absolute disarray over this. They cannot agree on what they stand for. They voted against condemning an ideology that threatens our freedom. Now their leaders are threatening to punish the few who did the right thing. Jeffries gave the same reason for voting no as Aguilar. He said they objected to the link with the SAVE America Act.
