President Trump ordered renovation work to start immediately on Sunday, despite a federal judge blocking tree removal just days before. This direct command comes while the East Potomac Golf Links sits on the edge of a legal shutdown. The White House insists the project moves forward regardless of the court order.
According to the Washington Examiner, Trump posted on Truth Social that the Department of Interior has an absolute right to fix the course. He called the current state of the links terrible and unsafe for anyone to play. The president stated that the finished product will be world class and bring great prestige back to the nation’s capital.
The legal fight centers on over 400 trees cut down last Saturday at the site. Until October 26, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes prolonged the prohibition against additional tree cutting. She reacted to Trump’s Sunday post by ordering the government to clarify its plans by 8 p.m. that same day.
Reyes stated she was furious with the administration for moving so fast. Officials cleared the trees due to President Trump’s insistence on rapid progress regarding his redesign, she observed. The Trump administration argues the course is in very poor condition with falling, dangerous, and disease infested trees. They also cite a collapsing and hazardous seawall as a major safety risk.
Trump has tapped famed architect Tom Fazio to lead the overhaul of the 106-year-old park. The president says the new design will be open to the public while maintaining the highest level of golf. He claims the renovated course could host major events like the U.S. Open and the Ryder Cup.
According to the New York Post, the project will shut down the course for 15 months starting November 15. Trump stated the original course was famous for having no trees and offering clear views of Washington. He argues the area is now completely overgrown, dysfunctional, and unsafe for visitors.
The administration is asking the judge to step down from the case entirely. Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr. It was written that the judge’s emotional displays during earlier hearings have plainly shown she lacks impartiality now. The Interior Department maintains that Reyes is a far-Left activist who cannot be fair.
